The further I travel along this path they call life, the more I wonder why we are drawn to drama and why we become lost in the details. It seems easier to obsess about precise words uttered in one single conversation than to reflect on the meaningful and intimate nature of conversations held over a lifetime spent with loved ones. A close friend once told me that she would ‘look at the sky’ every time she felt overwhelmed with the details of life. The vast, expanse above her would provide a soothing perspective, taking her out of the limiting view that she had developed within the insular confines of her mind.
Lately in my photography I have noticed a tendency towards more shots of the horizon and the sky. Perhaps this is my unconscious reminding me to broaden my perspective as I tackle some challenging changes in my life. This morning I revisit the weekly photo challenge, for the first time in a long time. And curiously, the theme brings me back to the details, seeking a closer perspective of the subject matter of my photography.
Maybe life requires us to alternately step back and move closer, vary the angle, shift perspective, revisit the same problem at various times of the day and night to see it in a different light. Maybe sometimes, in order to see differently, we also need to change the lens.
